When sourcing custom T-shirts, one of the most important fabric decisions is choosing between 100% cotton and a cotton/elastane blend. Both can deliver excellent results, but they serve different product strategies and consumer expectations.
100% cotton remains a classic choice for T-shirts because of its natural hand feel, breathability, and versatility. It is suitable for everyday basics, heavyweight T-shirts, streetwear, and premium casual collections.
The final performance depends heavily on the cotton quality and fabric construction. Combed cotton, long-staple cotton, ring-spun yarn, and different GSM levels can create significantly different results even when the label simply says “100% Cotton.”
For brands emphasizing natural fibers and a traditional T-shirt feel, 100% cotton is often a strong choice.
Adding a small percentage of elastane can significantly change the wearing experience. A typical blend such as 95% cotton / 5% elastane or 96% cotton / 4% elastane provides additional stretch, recovery, and shape retention.
This makes cotton/elastane particularly suitable for fitted T-shirts, fashion basics, active-inspired casualwear, and products where freedom of movement is important.
However, elastane also introduces additional considerations during dyeing, finishing, washing, and production. Fabric specifications should therefore be evaluated as a complete system rather than simply comparing fiber percentages.
The right choice depends on the product's target market and positioning.
100% cotton is ideal when natural fiber content, breathability, and classic T-shirt construction are priorities.
Cotton/elastane is better when stretch, fitted silhouettes, comfort, and shape recovery are more important.
For B2B buyers, the best specification should consider fiber quality, yarn, GSM, fabric construction, stretch and recovery, finishing, target climate, and end use.
The goal is not to find one universally superior fabric, but to select the right material for the product and market you are building.
